Matariki - The Maori New Year

This month our Centre Planning is focussed on Matariki.  This is a very exciting time of the year.  We have been learning Maori myths and legends, waiata and Arts and Crafts.  Watch this space to see some of our photos taken during Matariki.

Matariki Rising - Matariki Extravaganza in Glen Innes

This series of arts workshops and presentations throughout the Matariki Trail week culminates in a grand finale concert with local Tamaki talent performing alongside established Kiwi musicians.

Workshop themes:
  • Karanga (Monday): Wananga on the first call of the marae
  • Raranga (Tuesday): Traditional and contemporary weaving arts
  • Gardening (Wednesday): Traditional approaches to growing foods and medicinal plants
  • Rongoa (Thursday): Traditional medicinal plants and practices
  • Matariki (Friday): Historical relevance of Matariki from a Māori and Pacific perspective
  • Whakangahau (Saturday): Two hour concert prior to the Light Trail starting.
